Meet us in the 15th Euro Fed Lipid congress in Uppsala!

We will attend the 2017 Euro Fed Lipid Congress “Oil, Fats and Lipids: New Technologies and Applications for a Healthier Life”in Uppsala (Sweden)  to present our latests results in our animal feeding research  and on olive oil research.

Two posters will be presented on animal feeding research:

“Quality of acid oils and fatty acid distillates used in animal feeding”

“Oxidative stability of acid oils and fatty acid distillates used in animal feeding”

These results correspond to our current project on the valorization of fat by-products and co-products for animal feeding purposes.

This is a 4-year project that started on 2016, and it is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industy and Competitiveness and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF – FEDER)  (ref: AGL2015-64431-C2-2-R MINECO/FEDER, UE).

One poster will be presented on olive oil research:

“Sesquiterpene fingerprint for olive oil authentication: same tool, different approach”

This poster presents the first results of our research within the OLEUM project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No 635690).

We hope to meet you there!

Research on fats and oils has a long tradition in our Department. Two references exemplify this:

  • Ramón Casamada Mauri (1874-1936), who was Full Professor on 1911, bought a copy (that we still preserve) of the 5th Edition (1913) of “Chemical Technology and Analysis of Oils, Fats and Waxes autored by Julius Lewkowitsch (1857-1913), a referent in the fats and oils field. It is an encyclopaedic work that contains extensive information on oil composition and technology.

  • The other reference is a study by Casamada entitled “Espectros de absorción en ultravioleta para la diferenciación de los aceites de oliva vírgen de los refinados [“Utraviolet absorption spectra for the differentiation of virgin and refined olive oils”] (Barcelona, Imp, Sobr. López Robert y Cia, 1935).

This shows that topics of our current research were already a concern 80 years ago, and that some of those results are still valid!

Who was….? Jordi Folch

1450111603-jordi-folchjpgSure we all have referred on occasion to the Folch method used to extract the lipid fraction of a particular type of substrates. The name seems to indicate it but today, March 25th, 104 years ago the Catalan, JORDI FOLCH PI was born.  He was a doctor (by University of Barcelona) and a biochemist and became a leading figure in neuroscience (he was the first professor of this discipline at the Harvard University). He is recognized as pioneer in the field of chemistry of complex lipids and I think that from now on he will be a reference for us.
Son of the poet Rafael Folch, Jordi died in Boston in 1979.
