The project was financed by the 6th Framework Programme of Research of the EC (FEEDING FATS SAFETY, Quality and safety of feeding fats obtained from co-products or by-products from the food chain). The duration of the project was January 2005 to May

2008, and the consortium was composed by 8 research teams and a company, corresponding to 4 countries, and was coordinated by Dr. Rafael Codony.
- In a first step, a chemical characterization was made (composition, degradation and persistent contaminants) in a series of fat by-products from the food chain, including acid oils from refining, lecithins, fish oils, recycled cooking oils, animal fats, …
- In a second step, experimental trials were carried out in chicken and rabbit with several of these fat materials, in order to assess their effects on animal production and health parameters, on lipid meat quality, and on the safety for the consumer measured by the transfer of main persistent contaminants (dioxins, PCB, PAH) from feed to meat.
